Linux Distro Recommendations

Ubuntu - http://www.ubuntulinux.org
Ubuntu is a free desktop distro based on Debian, meaning it uses the hands-down best binary package management tools - apt. It comes in two flavors - a KDE and a GNOME one. Ubuntu uses a non-graphical, but simple to follow installer with automatic hardware detection. A new version is released every 6 months.

Arch Linux - http://archlinux.org/
Arch Linux is a young distro based on the ideas of Slackware and CRUX. It is lightweight and up-to-date. The installer is also simplistic, but does its job well. Arch Linux features a powerful package manager with full dependency checking and a very simple build-system that allows you to make your own packages without any hassle

Gentoo Linux - http://www.gentoo.org/
Gentoo Linux is a source-based distro, meaning you have to compile all packages yourself (though it does provide binaries for some of the bigger ones). This can take quite a long time, but you end up with an optimized system, customized just the way you want. Gentoo comes with no installer, but it features great documentation on how to setup your system.

Feel free to post more distros.
