I personally believe that SDL would be a better choice compared with Allegro. SDL is a lot faster (it lacks drawing primitives though, but that shouldn't matter) and is more appropriate for pixelwork.

When there's 3000 objects on screen, Gusanos is pretty shonky. Well, aren't all those objects just pixels? Think about it.

yea i have a pretty good computer and it still lags on me when they is a lot of pixels

SDL is not faster for what we're doing, but gus1.0 might switch to it anyway (in my opinion because it's not as much a pile of hacks as allegro is). 3000 pixels are easy to render. The thing is that rendering is never the whole story. Gusanos runs fine for me with 90000 blood particles, but that's because blood is relatively cheap to simulate.
