In 2009 Liero 1.35b was released as the first official new version of Liero. With 1.36 Liero continues to evolve, though very slightly. The gameplay is still the same, but the structure around is improved on. The menus have been reorganized and updated to integrate all the new options that came with OpenLiero (replays and such), and some things have been moved around. The old "SAVE" thing was removed and is now fully replaced by the player profiles.

Another update is the new game mode, 'Holdazone'. As the name implies, the objective is to defend a zone from your opponent. This is essentially King of the Hill, and the zone will time out after some time, and then re-appear again somewhere else on the map. The old Capture the Flag has been removed since it didn't work anyway. It might return sometime in the future. Game of Tag is still the same as before.

The most startling update however is the addition of a new bot. By selecting AI in the controller options, (instead of Human or CPU), you get to play against a significantly more difficult opponent than the good old CPU-I'll-try-shooting-the-wall bot. This new bot uses all the tricks in the book to dodge damage, and inflict it on you. Its a tough challenge on Holdazone too.

The last bit of update is the addition of post-game stats. After a game ends (according to settings, pressing ESC does not end a game) a stats screen will appear. It will tell you how much damage you inflicted, and when and where you did it. It is also possible to play old replays and get stats from those games as well. The stats screen includes heatmaps for where you were during the game, and where damage to you was dealt. A tool both for good fun, and for analyzing yourself after you lost.

Came across some old image today - 9.4.2005
You're there!  Wink

It's almost the earliest digital photo I have- My brother takes a picture while I study and mIRC is open in the background.
(I removed myself from the photo - it's an ugly close-up of my right cheek and nose..)

Here it is:

After this review was posted on YouTube last year, we experienced a strong peak in Liero downloads. By peak I mean a 1000% increase.

Starting 2013, Liero.be - the official Liero website offers three options for download. Also a new design.

The original version 1.33 is of course available, as it must be.
The updated version 1.35b with all its improvements, of course
And the newcomer, lierolibre is the third guy on the block.

lierolibre is a fork of OpenLiero, and it contains no proprietary content. It has the same gameplay and options (including the secret F1-menu) as 1.35b, but with a new (free) sound pack which makes the game sound a little quirky. It is also quite a bit larger in terms of megabytes you need to download. Close 10, compared to the classic <1mb.

lierolibre is a lot easier to modify, since it is to a great degree based on txt files. Like OpenLiero you may of course check out the source code.

Happy Gaming!
