GusanosFiles - Mirror for maps, mods, etc.

There's a major problem with the Gusanos community right now: dead links and awful file hosting. Setrodox's Gusanos file mirror, powerhuhn.net, is dead and never to return. Many member's personal sites hosting their own files often go down and stay dead. All the popular file hosts used by mappers and modders delete files after a time period of 30-90 days. It all results in a bunch of dead links and more mods and maps out there that Gusanos players can't get at.

Here's the solution: GusanosFiles.co.cc
                                (Extra alternate link) - If the 1st link is ever down use this one instead.
I've set up a wiki-style file mirror/website for every kind of Gusanos file. Modders and mappers from this forum can request an account to be able to add files to the site.

Site features & info:
Here's some of the features:
-Site set up with Google Apps Pages, which means...

• 10 gigabytes of file storage directly on GusanosFiles (10 mb limit per each file)
• Unlimited bandwidth
• Files never deleted due to inactivity
• Stores old versions of pages and files which can be recovered if they get deleted
• Built in Google search engine to find files and pages
• If someone enters an incorrect link to a file or page, Google suggests a redirection to a URL with the same name. (We're sorry, but we were unable to locate the page you requested. Here are some similar pages from this site: File.zip)
• No ads

Because of the 10 mb max file size limit for files uploaded directly to GusanosFiles, GusanosFiles also has an  account with Microsoft's filehosting/online backup service, Skydrive.
(GusanosFiles file size limit shouldn't be much of a problem though. Almost all mods and maps are <10 mb)

Skydrive features:

• 5 additional gigabytes of storage (50 mb limit per each file)
• Unlimited(?) bandwidth
• Files never deleted due to inactivity
• Direct linking to downloads - Downloaders probably won't even realize the file isn't hosted on the site
• No ads
• Uploader account username@gusanosfiles.co.cc comes with Gmail-style service at mail.gusanosfiles.co.cc

If there are files larger than 50 mb, GusanosFiles also has accounts on various other file hosts, all of which have no ads or, in most cases, direct linking to downloads, and claim never to delete files due to inactivity. In order to keep files centralized, these will only be used with files over 50 mb and Skydrive and the GusanosFiles site will be used at all other times. The idea is to keep files from being scattered all over different file hosts.

GusanosFiles was created with stability and longevity in mind. It uses Google and Microsoft because if their sites go down, all our sites will go down. Neither service ever expires for any reason so GusanosFiles should be as stable as any other site on the net!

Alright, enough of that. About uploaders: The site will only be at its fullest potential and usefulness when it's maintained by the Gusanos community. Currently, uploader accounts need to be requested. This is to prevent damage to the site. When/if Google updates its page control levels that might be changed.

How to upload files: It's not complicated. To apply to be a GusanosFiles uploader post in this forum and include the following in your post:

• Make a post in this forum specifically stating that “I am requesting to become a GusanosFiles uploader.”
• List your maps/mods/other contributions to the Gusanos community as insurance that you will use the site respectfully and responsibly. Include links to your mods/maps if possible.
• Pledge that you will always be good and never never ever senselessly delete files.

If you're accepted, you'll receive a message in your ComSer forum inbox with your username and temporary password. Go to GusanosFiles.co.cc, go to the bottom of the page and click "Sign in". Enter your username and password from the message you received. Go into GusanosFiles and upload away! You can change your password once you log in.

Your account will be an email address at gusanosfiles.co.cc in the form username@gusanos.co.cc. This new address will be added to the help@gusanosfiles.co.cc mail list and receive any problems downloaders have with files, etc. GusanosFiles needs uploaders, but currently your account application will probably only be accepted if you are currently a mapper or modder or in any other way a serious contributer to the Gusanos community. This is to keep inexperienced uploaders from abusing the site and deleting things.

How to download files: Just go to GusanosFiles.co.cc and download away!

 Update: Here's a new addition to GusanosFiles:

Downloader's Upload Zone (a.k.a. the DUZ)

Now those who are ineligible for uploader accounts due to a lack of contributions can upload as well.
The files and list information added to the, um, DUZ will eventually be transferred to GusanosFiles by an uploader. The DUZ isn't intended to be a secure downloading mirror but more of a temp transfer zone for files and file info.

It's still in development as well so the site will likely be changed around a bit and some uploading instructions probably need to be added.

Rules for GusanosFiles uploaders and other info will be posted eventually.

[edit] Oh, and for the list of broken links in the map list section. Those two maps by me (glass and mud) no logner exist anywhere. Not a big loss, they were poorly done.

Just one little clarification: WingMod has 10 weapons, not including upgrades. They are all completely scripted though, that's why there is just one .wep file. Also, it should be noted somewhere that it is a single player mod. Anyway - the project is quite amazing :>

The easiest method is to post in this forum (original post was edited to include this info as well):

• Make a post in this forum specifically stating that “I am requesting to become a GusanosFiles uploader.”

A message will be PMed to your ComSer forum inbox with your username (same as forum name) and a temporary password if you are accepted. You can change your password the first time you log in.

Nope! GusanosFiles uses Google Apps Sites, Windows Live Skydrive, and a CO.CC domain name. All of these services are free and they all seem to claim that they’ll be around indefinitely and will keep your account around indefinitely without any maintenance. So if they're all true to their word I could never touch the site again and it would be up for good. That has been the case with Google Page Creator for the past few years so i think Google Sites will try to follow that trend. For the domain name, the CO.CC website says this in their FAQ:
   Q:Can I use a domain for my life time?
   A: Sure. If your real homepage/blog is changed, change your information at Domain Settings. Your friends or clients will only need to remember just one domain name you got from our service.

In any case, if the CO.CC domain name is ever lost for any reason, (e.g. the CO.CC company goes out of business or something) GusanosFiles can be accessed directly through the Google Pages link: http://sites.google.com/a/gusanosfiles.co.cc/home/
But that's harder to remember. And it's just not as much fun.
If the CO.CC service goes down the site and all its files and services will still work at this link.

Yes. This has been clarified in the first post: Your uploader account is an email address. You do not use your personal email. Uploaders receive their account at GusanosFiles in the form username@gusanosfiles.co.cc. Uploaders use this account to login and edit the site. They can also use this account as an email address and login to mail.gusanosfiles.co.cc to use a 7 gb Gmail-style email account that comes with the username@gusanosfiles.co.cc address.

If files are truly not worth playing I suppose they don't need to be uploaded to the site. If that is the case and they are impossible to find they can be taken off the upload list.

Fixed weapons number. Special info like the single player aspect can be put into the map description when the Maps page gets put together. The Map List page is a little cramped and it's hard to say everything about a mod in it.

@ Netsu: The MX files for the mail service weren't configured yet so the emails didn't go through. The MX files will update within 48 hours and then, if they're properly configured, the mail service should be working.

I dunno... you didn't list your Gusanos contributions... 

@ Guth, Netsu, Basara: Your applications have been accepted and you have all received a personal message with your usernames and temporary passwords. Login to create a permanent password and start uploading.

Edit: After logging in, do not click the big blue "create site" button (if you are directed to such a page. If you don't know what I'm talking about then you have nothing to worry about. Google seems to occasionally direct you to the main Google Apps Sites page instead of GusanosFiles.co.cc)
If you do find yourself at a page with a blue "create site" button, paste this url into your browser: http://sites.google.com/a/gusanosfiles.co.cc/home/

...after the page loads if you see the headings "Create new page" "Edit page" "More actions", etc. at the top of the site you are properly logged in and ready to upload.

I tried to write some stuff onto the Mod page, but well, I got annoyed by the not working on opera wysiwyg editor so I stopped

Opera doesn't work well? Interesting. So far it has worked fine on Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer and Google Chrome for me. Though Google Chrome gives a warning about how the browser isn't supported and won't work before working perfectly.

Edit: Oh. Shoot. Here's the problem you were probably having:

In order to correctly access, view or download attachments, the end user must be directly visiting the page that the attachment is hosted on.

Copying and pasting the attachment URL directly will not work.

In other words, attachments won't work the way they need to. Time to transfer a bunch of files to the new Mods Files and Maps Files file cabinets. 

Update: All maps and mods transferred. Now when uploading files, screenshots, etc., please add them to the Map Files and Mod Files pages. They work better than attaching things.
